  1. These are the minutes from the Network Information Services
  2. Infrastructure (NISI) WG meeting of Monday, March 16.

  12. The "Building a Network Information Services Infrastructure" document
  13. was issued as an FYI 12 in February.
  14.  
  15. The document on "Privacy and Integrity Issues in NIC Databases" is now
  16. in draft form and will be reviewed by the volunteer authors.
  17. (Basically, all the authors had seen the outline, but not the draft at
  18. the time of the meeting.)  Once they are satisfied, it will be sent to
  19. the whole NISI list for review and comments.

  21. 2. Info Discovery

  23. This was left from the last meeting.  There was great interest in the
  24. question of, once we have information, how do we let users know it's
  25. there?  Since the lats meeting, lots of other groups have also become
  26. interesting in this question (well, there were a lot of people
  27. interested long before the last meeting obviously).  We decided that
  28. this was an implementation question beyond the scope of the NISI
  29. group.  We would stay informed of the work of other groups and provide
  30. input from a user point of view to them.  (After our group met, I
  31. attended the wais-X.500 BOF, which turned out to include many other
  32. "info servers."  That group decided to form an official working group
  33. to work on matters related to allowing existing info services to
  34. interact.  This is something to keep an eye on.)
  35.  
  36. 3. Next NISI Project

  38. a. brainstorming
  39.  
  40. We tossed around a few ideas for future projects, which I list here
  41. in no particular order.  This was brainstorming, so don't ask
  42. for detailed descriptions of each idea.
  43.  
  44.  - service discovery (finding out what services are available on the Internet)
  45.  - procedures for NICs to deposit information into the various info
  46.     services
  47.  - a "nethelp" utility that would give users fast, uniform info on
  48.     what the Internet is and how to use it
  49.  - a list of useful services to do
  50.  - a list of services each site offers
  51.  - a mailing list archive
  52.  - a clarification of the core of info about the Internet that all
  53.     Internet NICs should provide
  54.  - tools to provide info
  55.  
  56. Of these, we had the most interest in the lists of services and
  57. the "nethelp" (Martyne Hallgren must get credit for that coinage)
  58. service.

  61. b. list of services doc
  62.  
  63. This doc will follow the IAFA recommendations and publish a list of
  64. the services available from that administrative subdomain (not
  65. necessarily just from that one site, but from the various service
  66. providers at that administrative entity).  The list of services is
  67. something like a description of the various services and information
  68. on how to access them.
  69.  
  70. This document may, in fact, overlap the Nethelp doc described
  71. next.  It may have been another approach to the same information.
  72. I'm sure any overlap will come to light as work progresses on the
  73. docs.  For now, let us think of this document as the description
  74. of the services that a nethelp tool could access (i.e. the tool
  75. could access these descriptions).  The next document describes
  76. what we want the tool to look like (generically) and do.

  79. volunteered to work on this document.

  81. A draft of this document is due by the next IETF meeting in July.

  84. c. Nethelp doc
  85.  
  86. This doc is aimed at specifying the type of information a nethelp
  87. service would provide.  A nethelp service is envisioned to be
  88. something a new user can very easily access that will orient him
  89. toward what the Internet is and where he can get more info about
  90. it.  But what info should such a service provide?  Here are some
  91. of the ideas that were tossed around:

  93.  - network use etiquette and guidelines
  94.  - new user guide fino
  95.  - usage policy
  96.  - info re the net
  97.  - net access info
  98.  - resources and services
  99.  - answers to commonly asked questions (which we can glean from NICs)
  100.  - who to call for help
  101.  
  102. Other thoughs re this doc were should it have a standard interface or
  103. not (the vote was no, but an easy interface is necessary); it should
  104. include help for individual sites re what they can add/customize; it
  105. should address the fears a new user has about breaking stuff if he
  106. tries new things; it could be scalable and include hooks to add
  107. information that might benefit more experiences users as well, or
  108. include pointers to more detailed, technical info an different
  109. subjects.  Specifying concrete ideas in this area might add to the
  110. momentum of getting funding to implement such a utility or help those
  111. with info servers to extend them to this use.

  113. Another idea regarding the interface was that it could start
  114. with standard questions, such as who-is, what-is, where-am-i,
  115. how, where-is, etc.  
  116.  
  117. Although the scope of the document was not fully defined in the
  118. meeting, it will concentrate on what information the NISI group would
  119. recommend that such a program contain, possibly even including
  120. explicit text, what services such a program should provide, and,
  121. generally speaking, what the program could look like.  It will
  122. not necessarily cover implementation strategies, although those
  123. can be considered as well.

  126. Tim Berners-Lee, Pat, and April will be working on this doc.

  134. There was another suggestion that came up amongst the nethelp
  135. discussion that is worth noting, although it is probably out of the
  136. scope of NISI (every time I say something like that, you can challenge
  137. it, of course).  It was the suggestion that a controlled usage
  138. environment be created where users can test out their knowledge of how
  139. to use different Internet resources, such as FTP.  It would be a
  140. closed environment in that it would not affect Internet use or
  141. operations, but would be realistic in that it would simulate the
  142. Internet environment.  It might have slightly more user friendly error
  143. messages and more help/guidance in using the net.  Such an environment
  144. could be used to allay fears new users have about using the net that
  145. cause them to experiment less than they might otherwise if they were
  146. confident they couldn't break anything.  It would be especially useful
  147. for pre-college age users.
